Built to Last: Cultivating Resilience for Law and Life (Live Event/Webinar)

Resilience has been described as the psychological ability to adapt resourcefully to stress, adversity, setbacks, challenges, or crises—and research shows that lawyers tend to score lower on this trait than other people. Fortunately, resilience isn’t immutable.

This two-part CLE presentation offered by the Oregon Attorney Assistance Program features national keynote speaker Larry Richard, JD, PhD, an author and consultant on the psychology of lawyer behavior, and the OAAP attorney counselors, whose work on lawyer well-being is a leading voice on this topic in our community and the profession at large.

In part one via webinar, Dr. Richard will discuss research summarized in his new book, Thin-Skinned, which explains how the “lawyer personality” traits that help us practice law effectively can also make us more vulnerable to stress and uncertainty. He will also outline several evidence-based strategies that lawyers can use to increase their resilience. In part two, the OAAP attorney counselors will facilitate experiential learning to give participants an opportunity to practice and reinforce resilience skills.

The free webinar and in-person workshop will be held on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. (in-person registration starts at 10:00 a.m.). via Zoom and in the Columbia Rooms at the Oregon State Bar Center. Boxed lunches are available for $15, or participants may bring their own lunches.

Participants attending in person also have the opportunity to purchase Dr. Richard’s book for $80—a 20% discount from the ABA retail price. (ABA non-member price is $99.95.)

Please register by October 1 if you plan to order a book.
